Jocelyn Cortez

Perla Hernandez Sotelo

Jocelyn Cortez is the lead a.m. teacher in the Sun classroom. Jocelyn is originally from Mexico and she decided to begin teaching because she has the opportunity to profoundly impact the lives of children, and there is an excitement and joy and suspense in the journey. Jocelyn appreciates the multiculturalism of Joyce and a fun fact about her is that she loves ice cream!

Perla Hernandez Sotelo is the lead p.m. teacher in the Sun classroom. This is her fourth year working at Joyce, and third as Lead Teacher. Perla is originally from Mexico, and was raised in Nevada. She teaches because representation, culture, and equity matter to me. I have been on the other side of the education system and hope to be one of the many seeds that sparks the curiosity in our future leaders. While at Joyce, she enjoys digging for worms, reading books in silly voices, and hearing the spanglish words that are created daily in our bilingual environment. One of her biggest desires is to become a foster mom in the future and move to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato (Mexico) once she retires.

Major Goals and Milestones

With the rollout of Reggio Emilia curriculum this year, the goal is to allow children to be the leaders of their learning with open ended learning plans.  Children will be encouraged to engage in play based exploration in areas that capture their interest. From here, teachers will be able to adjust the curriculum to the specific needs and interests of their students.
